The Hornets will be phased out by 2030. The HX Program was set up to replace the current fleet with new fighters.
Fighters play a key role in Finland's defence capability, and to extend the service life of the Hornet fleet would not be a sufficient solution.
The HX Program will take about 10 to 15 years to complete. The final decision on fighters will be made in 2021.

On 27 April 2018, a Request for Quotation was sent to the governments of Great Britain, France, Sweden and the United States to be forwarded to the five companies who responded to the requests for information.
The responses to the call for tender will start an extensive and comprehensive negotiation and evaluation process.
The new government taking office in 2019 is expected to express its opinion on the HX Program. Possible steering from the new government will be taken into account in the negotiations regarding calls for tender.
According to the Ministry of Defence’s plan, the final decision on fighter procurement will be made by the government taking office in 2019. The parliament will decide on the funding under its budgetary authority.
Deliveries of the HX aircraft will start in 2025 and the last ones will be delivered by about 2030 when the last Hornets are to be phased out.
