Environmental Toolbox for Deploying Forces

Subject matter experts from Finland, Sweden and the United States have developed environmental training material for deploying forces. The work reflects a shared commitment to proactively reduce the environmental impacts of military operations and to protect the health and safety of deployed forces.

The purpose of this work is to provide a toolbox of environmental training resources to plan and implement sound environmental practices. It seeks to fill a gap by suggesting common practices and offering practical guidance on environmental considerations for deploying forces. This coordinated effort also enhances future possibilities to harmonize procedures and thereby facilitating interoperability, helping educate new personnel quickly and helping to standardize environmental requirements in technical procedures.

The toolbox is comprised of three main areas: a general training module, a technical module and a reference module.  The first module consist of tailored briefings for different skill levels such as for commander-level, environmental officer (EO)-level and soldier-level.  The technical module focuses on for example the waste management, water management and other environmental considerations. And the reference module pulls together materials from both international and national sources for example documents generated by NATO, the UN, and the EU.
