Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2019
Finland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2019. In the field of defence cooperation, the focus of Finland’s Presidency is two-fold:
Finland aims to advance the topical EU agenda. Goals and actions will be coordinated with the EU institutions. The links between the different EU defence initiatives and ensuring a consistent overview across them will receive special attention.
The priorities of Finland’s Presidency in the defence field include advancing digitalisation and artificial intelligence and countering hybrid threats. In these areas, Finland will strive to strengthen partnerships especially between the EU and NATO and the EU and the United States.
Finland will promote its presidency priorities through meetings held in Finland, through different kinds of side events organised during the Presidency and through non-papers.
