Finland and Sweden to expand cooperation in procuring defence materiel

Minister of Defence Antti Kaikkonen has authorised the Defence Forces to sign implementation documents to prepare for the Joint Procurement of Small Arms Family and on accessing to the Framework Agreement on anti-tank weapons between the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration and Saab Dynamic AB.

The Implementing Arrangement for Joint Procurement of Small Arms Family will launch preparations to procure jointly small arms, which will include the following titles: assault rifles, single-shot and automatic rifles, personal defence weapons, single-shot precision rifles and military shotguns. Any future procurements will require a separate decision.

The document Implementing Arrangement for Joining the Framework Agreement Anti-Tank Systems gives Finland the possibility to use the Framework Agreement regarding anti-tank weapons that was concluded between the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration and Saab Dynamics AB. The Framework Agreement covers NLAW missiles, Carl-Gustav 84 recoilless rifles, AT4 single-shot launchers and ammunition, and training equipment for these weapons. Any procurement decisions under the Framework Agreement require a separate decision.

The implementation documents build upon the arrangement document signed between Finland and Sweden in September 2021, which focused on the soldier’s weapon systems and related technologies. Implementation documents enable joint procurements that improve the availability of critical defence materiel in Finland and Sweden, as countries can operate through the same commercial agreement.
