Marcus Rantala appointed as State Secretary to the Minister of Defence

On Thursday 23 June, the Government appointed Marcus Rantala, Master of Social Sciences, as State Secretary to the Minister of Defence. Mr Rantala will transfer to the Ministry of Defence from the position of State Secretary to the Minister of Culture and Sport and gender equality affairs.

The State Secretary assists the Minister of Defence in matters relating to political steering and preparatory work. In line with the minister's instructions, he also assists and represents the minister in drafting political guidelines, handling inter-ministerial co-ordination and harmonising policy positions.

The term of the State Secretary, who must enjoy the confidence of the minister in question, is linked to that of the minister. During the talks on the formation of each new Government, the appointment of, and new requirement for, State Secretaries is assessed.
