Defence Minister Niinistö to take part in Nordic defence minister meeting in Oslo

Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö will participate in a meeting for Nordic defence ministers to be held in Oslo 13 to 14 November 2018. During this meeting, a working session of the Nordic and Baltic defence ministers and the Northern Group defence ministers will also be organised. Norway holds the chairmanship of NORDEFCO in 2018 and the meetings are a part of the one-year chairmanship.

The Nordic defence ministers will discuss current topics in Nordic defence cooperation such as the new vision for NORDEFCO and the results of Norway’s presidency in relation to space and unmanned systems. Other themes on the agenda will be the NORDEFCO Easy Access project for easing border crossing, security situation in the neighbouring areas and joint exercises.

The United Nations peacekeeping operations, military mobility and strategic communications in relation to exercises will be discussed in the Northern Group’s working session. The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix will also be attending the working session. Apart from the Nordic countries and the Baltic States, the Northern Group consists of the Netherlands, Great Britain, Poland and Germany.

The Nordic-Baltic meeting will address the security situation in the neighbouring areas and the development of defence cooperation both at the regional and European level.
